ESSEX FARM

Job duties include but are not limited to:

  • Lift a minimum of 60 pounds
  • Work safely and quickly to open the farm to the public on time
  • Learn to properly care for a variety of farm animals 
  • Groom animals under guidance
  • Safely lead ponies around the pony track for children’s rides
  • Learn about the animals in your care and be able to talk to the public about the animals on the farm
  • Daily continuous cleaning, watering and feeding large animals
  • Interact with public in a courteous manner
  • Interact with co-workers in a courteous manner
  • Know where all animal exhibits are located throughout the zoo so you can direct visitors to the correct area
  • Rake leaves, weed the grounds, shovel stone dust and carry bags of wood shavings, grain and bales of hay to animal areas
  • Clean public paths continuously
  • Perform other duties as assigned

 

AVIARY &/or TOUCH TANK EXHIBITS &/or BUTTERFLY EXHIBIT

Job duties include but are not limited to:

  • Lift a minimum of 50 pounds
  • Work safely and quickly to open the exhibits by 10 am
  • Learn to properly care for & observe behavior & health of butterflies, parakeets, rays & sharks
  • Pickup and remove debris
  • Remove all food bowls, sweep paths, clean and water plants, wash windows
  • Hose paths and remove all feces; Clean public areas continuously
  • Guard entrance and exit so birds do not escape
  • Show visitors how to feed the parakeets & rays
  • Keep visitors on paths. Encourage proper interaction with the animals
  • Interact with public and co-workers in a courteous manner
  • Know where all animal exhibits are located throughout the zoo so you can direct visitors to the correct area
  • Perform other duties as assigned

 

CUSTODIAN
Job duties include but are not limited to:

  • Follow written and oral direction
  • Must be able to work safely and quickly
  • Clean/service restrooms as many times as needed ALL DAY
  • Clean/service staff buildings & restrooms
  • Restock cleaning supplies
  • Collect & dispose trash in restrooms as many times needed during the day
  • Sweep and mops floors
  • Clean windows using materials provided
  • Clean all signs throughout the zoo
  • Walk the Zoo grounds at least 6 times a day to remove trash along the zoo paths and in front of animal exhibits
  • Must be able to lift between 40 and 50 pounds

 

GENERAL MAINTENANCE / GROUNDSKEEPER
Job duties include but are not limited to:

  • Clean public restrooms
  • Use lawn mowers, weed whip, leaf blower & other small machinery
  • Manually rake and remove leaves
  • Weed gardens and areas around exhibits
  • Climb ladders to clean overhead fixtures and equipment
  • Maintain walkways
  • Dispose of debris & trash as many times as needed all day
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds
  • Follow written and oral direction
  • Must be able to work safely and quickly
  • Perform other duties as necessary

 

GUEST RELATIONS (CASHIER – GUEST RELATIONS ATTENDANT – MASCOT – CAROUSEL OPERATOR)
Job duties include but are not limited to:

  • Answer the phone properly &/or Take accurate messages
  • Write &/or print legibly
  • Count and record numerical data accurately
  • Perform basic computations such as addition, subtraction, division and multiplication
  • Operate a computerized cash register in order to total the price of individual entrance fees, collect cash, make change, and enter credit card data
  • Use various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems
  • Reconcile cash drawers
  • Perform other duties as assigned—i.e. wear the Zoo mascot costume, greet visitors, show parties where they are to set up

 

TREETOP ADVENTURE COURSE ATTENDANT

We are looking for:

  • Active people who will not be challenged by the height of the course (approximately 35ft above ground level)
  • Attention to detail and ability to follow job protocols are a must
  • Candidates who understand and will exhibit keen emphasis on customer service, safety and guest relations

Job duties include but are not limited to:

  • Guide guests/help run the outdoor Treetop Adventure aerial obstacle course during the Spring-Summer-Fall Season. 
  • Follow written and oral direction
  • Must be able to work safely and quickly
  • Availability on holidays and weekends
  • Perform other duties as necessary

 

MINI GOLF ATTENDANT

We are looking for active candidates who understand and will exhibit keen emphasis on customer service and guest relations. 

Job duties include but are not limited to:

  • Job duties vary from day to day but include: cleaning, weeding, light manual labor, guest services duties and course supervision. 
  • Candidates whom possess a willingness to participate in outdoor activities in an outdoor climate are desired.
  • Perform other duties as necessary

 

BOATING ATTENDANT

We are looking for active candidates who understand and will exhibit keen emphasis on customer service, safety and guest relations at the new waterfront paddle boating facility that will open this season.

Job duties include but are not limited to:

  • Cleaning
  • Light manual labor
  • Guest services duties
  • Dock supervision

Candidates whom possess a willingness to participate in outdoor activities in an outdoor climate are desired. Lifeguarding/pool supervision, although not required, is a plus.

THEN YOU WILL LOVE BEING A DOCENT!
Essex County’s Turtle Back Zoo in West Orange, NJ is growing by leaps and bounds and we expect the 2015 season to be busy and exciting! Volunteer your time with the rewarding experience of becoming a Zoo Docent.
Docents are among the most visible members of our Zoo community. Their main goal is to provide the Zoo guests with quality, educational and enriching experiences while they are here. Turtle Back Zoo docents act as guides, give educational talks, and are stationed throughout the Zoo to provide information to visitors about the Zoo and its animal collection. You don’t need a background in biology or zoology, just a love of zoos and interest in public service.
Docent Volunteer Requirements:
– must be at least 18 years old
– submit an application found at: http://turtlebackzoo.com/docent-volunteers/
– complete an interview held on Sunday, January 11, 2015
– complete a 6-day training course held on Sundays, beginning February 15, on Zoo grounds
– pay a one-time fee of $25 to cover training materials
– commit to volunteer a designated number of hours/events on at least two selected days a month throughout the year

Appreciate a Dragon Day, Sat., Jan. 17, 2015, 11 – 3

Dragons have significance in cultures around the world. Explore some of the myths and legends surrounding dragons. Keeper talks at our Komodo Dragon exhibit throughout the day and dragon stories, games, a scavenger hunt, and craft and activities for the kids are part of the action. At the 12:30 Komodo Dragon Keeper Talk, Shu will be letting us know his pick for the NFC championship game.
