The original rink was completed in 1958, with a seating capacity of approximately 2,500 spectators. A second rink was added in 1983, with a seating capacity of approximately 500 spectators. In 1986, South Mountain Arena became the official practice and training facility of the Stanley Cup Champion New Jersey Devils.
From 2004 to 2005 many new renovations took place throughout the skating facility: a new state of the art lobby of 14,000 square feet was added, which includes a skylight, automatic doors, three party/meeting rooms, concession stand, pro shop and arcade. Rink one has new seats, boards, glass and compressor; Rink two has a new dehumidification system.
