ESSEX FARM

Job duties include but are not limited to:

  • Lift a minimum of 60 pounds
  • Work safely and quickly to open the farm to the public on time
  • Learn to properly care for a variety of farm animals 
  • Groom animals under guidance
  • Safely lead ponies around the pony track for children’s rides
  • Learn about the animals in your care and be able to talk to the public about the animals on the farm
  • Daily continuous cleaning, watering and feeding large animals
  • Interact with public in a courteous manner
  • Interact with co-workers in a courteous manner
  • Know where all animal exhibits are located throughout the zoo so you can direct visitors to the correct area
  • Rake leaves, weed the grounds, shovel stone dust and carry bags of wood shavings, grain and bales of hay to animal areas
  • Clean public paths continuously
  • Perform other duties as assigned

AVIARY &/or TOUCH TANK EXHIBITS &/or BUTTERFLY EXHIBIT

Job duties include but are not limited to:

  • Lift a minimum of 50 pounds
  • Work safely and quickly to open the exhibits by 10 am
  • Learn to properly care for & observe behavior & health of butterflies, parakeets, rays & sharks
  • Pickup and remove debris
  • Remove all food bowls, sweep paths, clean and water plants, wash windows
  • Hose paths and remove all feces; Clean public areas continuously
  • Guard entrance and exit so birds do not escape
  • Show visitors how to feed the parakeets & rays
  • Keep visitors on paths. Encourage proper interaction with the animals
  • Interact with public and co-workers in a courteous manner
  • Know where all animal exhibits are located throughout the zoo so you can direct visitors to the correct area
  • Perform other duties as assigned

CUSTODIAN
Job duties include but are not limited to:

  • Follow written and oral direction
  • Must be able to work safely and quickly
  • Clean/service restrooms as many times as needed ALL DAY
  • Clean/service staff buildings & restrooms
  • Restock cleaning supplies
  • Collect & dispose trash in restrooms as many times needed during the day
  • Sweep and mops floors
  • Clean windows using materials provided
  • Clean all signs throughout the zoo
  • Walk the Zoo grounds at least 6 times a day to remove trash along the zoo paths and in front of animal exhibits
  • Must be able to lift between 40 and 50 pounds

GENERAL MAINTENANCE / GROUNDSKEEPER
Job duties include but are not limited to:

  • Clean public restrooms
  • Use lawn mowers, weed whip, leaf blower & other small machinery
  • Manually rake and remove leaves
  • Weed gardens and areas around exhibits
  • Climb ladders to clean overhead fixtures and equipment
  • Maintain walkways
  • Dispose of debris & trash as many times as needed all day
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds

GUEST RELATIONS (CASHIER – GUEST RELATIONS ATTENDANT – MASCOT – CAROUSEL OPERATOR)
Job duties include but are not limited to:

  • Answer the phone properly &/or Take accurate messages
  • Write &/or print legibly
  • Count and record numerical data accurately
  • Perform basic computations such as addition, subtraction, division and multiplication
  • Operate a computerized cash register in order to total the price of individual entrance fees, collect cash, make change, and enter credit card data
  • Use various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems
  • Reconcile cash drawers
  • Perform other duties as assigned—i.e. wear the Zoo mascot costume, greet visitors, show parties where they are to set up

TREETOP ADVENTURE COURSE ATTENDANT

We are looking for:

  • Active people who will not be challenged by the height of the course (approximately 35ft above ground level)
  • Attention to detail and ability to follow job protocols are a must
  • Candidates who understand and will exhibit keen emphasis on customer service, safety and guest relations

Job duties include but are not limited to:

  • Guide guests/help run the outdoor Treetop Adventure aerial obstacle course during the Spring-Summer-Fall Season.

  • Availability on holidays and weekends

MINI GOLF ATTENDANT

We are looking for active candidates who understand and will exhibit keen emphasis on customer service and guest relations. 

Job duties include but are not limited to:

  • Job duties vary from day to day but include: cleaning, weeding, light manual labor, guest services duties and course supervision. 
  • Candidates whom possess a willingness to participate in outdoor activities in an outdoor climate are desired.

BOATING ATTENDANT

We are looking for active candidates who understand and will exhibit keen emphasis on customer service, safety and guest relations at the new waterfront paddle boating facility that will open this season.

Job duties include but are not limited to:

  • Cleaning

Candidates whom possess a willingness to participate in outdoor activities in an outdoor climate are desired. Lifeguarding/pool supervision, although not required, is a plus.

TBZ Summer Camp Counselor Positions 

Essex County Turtle Back Zoo is currently recruiting for 2017 TBZ Summer Camp Counselors.  Camp counselors are responsible for teaching and supervising campers ages 5 to 14, as well as leading and evaluating the VolunTeen assistants.  Summer Camp activities include discovery activities, science lessons and experiments, games and crafts, outings into the Zoo and behind the scenes tours, supervised lunches and snacks, and extended care.

Responsibilities:

  • complete camp training
  • demonstrate and foster respect for all TBZ animals
  • support the mission of our Zoo and Education Department
  • engage campers in all activities
  • have fun, be part of a great camp memory
  • ensure inclusive environment for all campers
  • build good relationships with campers and their families
  • set and maintain/reinforce expectations of learning and behavior
  • follow the camp curriculum and schedule
  • ensure safety of all campers during all camp activities; provide responsible emergency care if needed
  • work well with camp supervisors, fellow counselors, and VolunTeen assistants
  • maintain clean and tidy classrooms
  • assist with live animal presentations

Work Schedule and Requirements:

  • mandatory training for all counselors from Wednesday, June 14 to Friday, June 23 (weekdays only) 8:30am to 4pm
  • daily schedule is Monday through Friday from 8:30am to 4pm (includes ½ hour paid lunch), or 8am to 5pm (includes ½ hour paid lunch plus ½ hour overtime) for extended care
  • camp weeks are from the week of June 26th (week 1) to the week of August 28th (week 10)
  • counselors must be available for 8 out of the 10 weeks of summer camp that we offer, and be available to work at least 2 weeks of the extended care schedule
  • counselors must be able to walk the whole of the Zoo at least twice per day during all summer weather conditions

Experience and Education Requirements:

  • pursuit or completion of a BA/BS degree in Education, Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, Zoology, Animal Science, or related field from an accredited college or university
  • minimum of 1 year supervisory and leadership experience with children ages 5 to 14
  • experience with informal environmental education highly recommended

Further Information:

  • general background in Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, Zoology, Animal Science is necessary
  • must be able to communicate effectively with campers, other staff, and camp families
  • adaptable to schedule changes, responsible in emergencies, quick learner
  • must demonstrate a high level of patience
  • must be at least 18 years old
  • pay is $10/hour with Seasonal Employee status

Volunteer Co-Coordinator, Turtle Back Zoo

The Volunteer Co-Coordinator will assist with the daily coordination and communication of the volunteer program at Turtle Back Zoo to ensure the proper staffing requirements of the institution are met.  The Coordinator will work closely with the volunteers and various staff members to accurately assign shifts and maintain volunteer records.  In addition, the Coordinator will assist with supervision, recruitment, interviews, and orientation of new volunteers.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Plans, organizes and manages the volunteer program, including recruitment, training, placement, record keeping, evaluation, recognition and retention.
  • Oversees the actual work of volunteers and works with staff to ensure the volunteer position descriptions are accurate and filled with skilled applicants.
  • Maintains and updates volunteer records.
  • Participates with the education department in on grounds programs and special events.
  • Performs administrative and clerical tasks, including responding to all inquiries related to the Volunteer Program in a timely manner (web, e-mail, voice).
  • Assists with the communication and enforcement of volunteer office policies and procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education

  • Bachelors’ degree or equivalent work experience.

Experience

  • 2 years of administrative experience in a fast-paced customer service-oriented environment.  Experience recruiting and training volunteers is preferred.
  • Must possess strong interpersonal skills.  The ideal person for this job would be a team player, personable, professional, and able to get along well with a variety of people.
  • Demonstrate ability and desire to motivate volunteers.
  • Strong attention to details and organizational skills.
  • Must have proficiency with MS office applications, especially Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated ability to juggle multiple competing tasks and demands.
  • Ability to work weekend days on a consistent basis.
