From our smallest spider to the half-ton North American Bison in our Great Plains Exhibit, Essex County’s Turtle Back Zoo offers a look at more than 100 different species of native and exotic animals from five continents. Get up close and personal with our animals at our Essex Farm Petting Zoo, and don’t forget to take a tranquil ride through South Mountain Reservation on our miniature train. Come back often as we constantly are adding new and exciting natural habitat exhibits for our animals. Whether you spend a day or an afternoon, Turtle Back Zoo is a special place where children and their families can learn about animals and gain appreciation for nature. I invite you to Experience Essex and Turtle Back Zoo.

🎇Species Spotlight Sunday!
Meet: African Giant Millipedes (Archispirostreptus gigas)
▶️IUCN Conservation Status: Least Concern
Despite milli denoting a thousand, millipedes typically only have 300-400 legs. What separates them from centipedes is how many legs per segment they have. Centipedes have 2 legs (1 pair) per segment, while millipedes have 4 legs (2 pairs). They will grow to be anywhere between 4-12 inches, and can taste and smell with every part of their body.
Millipedes are detritovores, meaning they feed primarily on decaying matter, removing waste and recycling important nutrients into the ecosystem. So next time you stop by the Reptile House, say a big THANK YOU to our millipedes as they are essential to have around!

🐾 If you are looking for a quick fix of true adorableness in your day, plan a stop at our Animal Wellness Center. Now available for view in the indoor atrium and outdoor nursery screens, our lion cub den cam plays daily footage of what our cubs are up to (a lot of sleeping, nursing and grooming). Note the footage is on a delay, so is not live and cannot be viewed anywhere except on zoo grounds.
Don`t forget to say "Hi" to our ring-tailed lemurs, Kellan and Kato, in the Nursery!

Rasputin, our almost 27-year-old, retired ambassador Red-tailed Boa (Boa constrictor ortonii) got his first session of cold laser therapy! ❄️
When we noticed his arthritis progressing, cold laser therapy was an option to support his long-term health and wellness. This treatment is designed to reduce inflammation and pain due to arthritis, which can occur in older animals, including snakes!
Treatments like Rasputin`s are viewable at 11am daily at our new Animal Wellness Center (time subject to change; additional procedures may occur throughout the day).
