Included with admission to the Zoo, guests have the unique opportunity to learn from the zookeepers themselves throughout the day at their respective habitats and learn more about: What the animals' daily diet is Their behaviors and enrichment given to promote natural behaviors Zoo visitors can attend one or all! They're timed so you can easily attend each talk and then head to the next one.

Prehistoric Playground

Located between the Essex Farm and Australian Outback, the zoo’s playground is a fun place for children to explore the prehistoric world through outdoor play. Featuring over-sized dinosaurs and plenty of climbing structures, the playground is a great place to get out some energy or stop to enjoy a snack break. RULES Playground intended for children 2 - 5 years old. All children require Adult supervision. Please be considerate of others. Please place all trash in the receptacles. The Zoo is a NO SMOKING facility. This includes vaping. Play in a safe and careful manner.

Zoo Train

Zoo Train

Departing from Turtle Back Junction, the zoo’s miniature train ride takes visitors through the beautiful South Mountain Reservation and returns to the zoo. As you leave the station, make sure to look to the left for a unique view of our Giraffe Yard. Strollers, food & beverage are not permitted on the train. Children must ride with an adult. The train departs approximately every 15 minutes from the station for an 8-10 minute trip. There is no $ charge to ride the train. Aviary

Aviary

Strollers are prohibited. Please leave in designated Stroller Parking area. Zoo is NOT Responsible for Damaged, Lost, or Stolen Items. When visiting our Australian Outback, be sure to come out and experience our free flight aviary where over 400 budgerigars will swoop & fly around you as you stroll along. As you walk the one-way path, you may also observe Laughing Kookaburras and Tawny Frogmouths. The aviary is open seasonally, usually mid-May through the end of October.

Butterfly Tent

Surround yourself in our tropical and flowering gardens as various butterfly species flutter around you. No Charge for children under 2 years old. Children must be accompanied by a ticketed adult. Butterfly Tent is NOT part of Zoo Membership. The Tent is a one way path. Exits near Carousel. Strollers are allowed, but please be mindful of the butterflies as they sometimes land on the ground! Please do not touch or grab the butterflies. Their wings are very sensitive! Zoo staff will be happy to help you if you happen to get a butterfly traveler. Wait for Zoo staff to let you in and out of the exhibit to safely view butterflies. SEASONAL EXPERIENCE | Open Memorial Day weekend - Labor Day weekend The Zoo constructs a 90-foot-long tent with 400 tropical and flowering plants and then let’s over 1,500 live butterflies flutter about. This rare experience introduces zoo visitors to the native and migratory species of our region including Monarchs, Swallowtails, Red Admirals, Mourning Cloaks, Fritillarys, Skippers, Baltimore Checkerspots, Hairstreaks, Red-spotted Purples, Painted Ladies, and more.  Learn about the metamorphosis of a butterfly firsthand as you explore the tent to find chrysalis’ in different stages of growth. Our Butterfly Tent is a true partnership project, with our Maintenance team constructing the exhibit, our Horticulture team (along with Master Gardeners & Docents) planting and overseeing our butterflies, our Animal Care and Guest Relations teams facilitating the day-to-day visitor experience and fund raised contributing to our support organization and conservation partner the Zoological Society of New Jersey. Our conservation efforts and support extend beyond this seasonal habitat and the zoo itself. Monarch butterflies, Danaus plexippus, are one of the most iconic butterflies in the world and they embark on one of the most complex migrations of any insect. Once common across North America, they are now experiencing steep declines due to habitat loss, pesticides, and climate change throughout the continent and were recently classified as Endangered. This makes widespread collaboration crucial for recovering and sustaining this species. In 2021, the Zoo joined the North American Monarch SAFE (Saving Animals From Extinction) Program through the Association of Zoos & Aquariums. North American Monarch SAFE is the only insect SAFE program which focuses on citizen science and public education of monarchs and their plight, habitat creation, restoration, and research. TBZ also began working with the Monarch Watch Tagging Program, a large-scale community science project that was initiated to help understand the dynamics of the monarch's fall migration through mark and recapture data. Over the past three years, we've tagged more than 800 Monarch adults to support migratory tracking.

Giraffe outdoors and giraffe feed are weather, maintenance, animal health & participation dependent. POLICIES: food items may vary Please note this is a feed only experience. Photos are not guaranteed. Touching of the giraffe is not allow. Participants will be asked to use hand sanitizer before feeding. Strollers will not be allowed into the feeding area.

Visit our indoor Touch Tank habitat to take a dive under the sea! Our main 1,600-gallon touch tank features two types of stingrays gliding through the waters. Can you spot both? Add on a Sting Ray Feed to your Zoo adventure. May contain shellfish. Note: Guests have the opportunity to dip their hands into the tank and discover the unique texture and movement of two species of stingrays at no cost.

African Adventure

African Adventure

The African Savannah is a premier world destination and the same goes for our habitat area here in Essex County. ​ Giraffe out in the yard and Giraffe feed are weather, maintenance, and animal health & participation depending. The sprawling savannah is our largest multi-species exhibit with some of the most iconic African species. Although they are the most populous of the subspecies, it is estimated there are fewer than 37,000 Masai giraffe remaining in the wild, (recent reports of poaching would suggest it likely to be significantly less). As an accredited member of the Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA) the giraffes are part of the AZA Species Survival Plan (SSP). SSPs are coordinated plans to manage the genetic diversity of animal species held in AZA zoos. In support of this plan, TBZ’s exhibit features a bachelor herd of five Masai males. The African Adventure exhibit was constructed to make the animals feel perfectly at home. It features three acres of land with grazing and shade stations. Multiple viewing areas let you move about the habitat to explore. When not outdoors, their climate-controlled barn with special flooring, giraffe-height windows and adjustable hay racks makes for a cozy home in a New Jersey winter. While the giraffes are the stars of this area, don’t miss the other animals from the savanna, including ostrich along with critically endangered bongo. In 2017, we opened our Lion and Hyena habitats. Spacious rotating spaces allow the animals room to roam and switch habitats to increase complexity for these species.​ Close up viewing windows can provide close encounters with these amazing animals. We are currently introducing a new female lion into our habitat with our male lion. You will usually only see one on view at a time. Shores of Africa, or our Penguin House, is a state-of-the-art habitat that houses a colony of 29 African penguins along with several pelicans. A small habitat near the exit houses a pair of bushbabies. These nocturnal animals are more active at night, so look up at the video monitors to see if you can catch them napping.

Amazing Asia

Amazing Asia

Asia contains over a quarter of the Earth’s land surface. Exotic and charismatic animals such as the red panda, Amur leopard, clouded leopard and gibbons inhabit this region of the zoo.  Watch gibbons swing (brachiate) through the jungle ruins as they welcome you to the area. If you step under the awning, you can still see our gibbon family on days that might be too chilly for outdoors. Outdoors on the far side, step up to our window view and see if a playful gibbon will come down to visit with you. Follow the extensive bamboo plantings to new holding and habitats for red pandas, clouded leopards, hornbill and endangered Asian turtle species built in 2022. This most timely habitat features AZA’s Reduce the Risk and Wildlife Trafficking Alliance initiatives and ties in the expansive biodiversity of Asian countries with the threat to both humans and animals from zoonotic disease through the One Health initiative.  Further up into Amazing Asia you will find the critically endangered Amur leopard habitats as well as a quiet area with seating and shade for those needing a break.

Australian Outback

An Aussie Walkabout... Welcome to the grasslands of the “world down under”, where huge marsupials hop like rabbits and chew cud like cows. Birds that are too big to fly.  Experience the upside down world of some of Australia’s most unusual wildlife!If you are ready for an engaging mini, check out our mob of Bennett’s Wallabies.  These animals, though similar to Kangaroos in habits and appearance, are a different species altogether.  Small, compact and full of energy, they are inquisitive and quick to flee. The Australian Walkabout features a walk-through budgerigar Aviary surrounded by wallabies. The walk-through features other native Australian birds, including Tawny frogmouths and Kookaburra. The Aviary is a guest favorite at the zoo.​ This Walkabout terminates in a connection to the Prehistoric Playground, Essex Farm & Amazing Asia habitats. This area is currently undergoing construction. Reopening planned for APRIL 2025.

Essex Farm

Home Grown 🌱 Nestled between the pines at the top of the Zoo is Essex Farm. Our cozy farm setting houses a special collection of hand-raised farm animals sure to delight! This fun hands-on farm welcomes visitors to feed goats and get close to other animals that have been vital to human civilization for thousands of years. Home to ponies, goats, zebu cows, and chickens, the farm also boasts a few unforgettable animals like our braying donkey and molasse-smelling kunekune pigs. Everything you thought you knew about farm animals and more! Around the back of the farm, you can see our seasonal vegetables gardens grown by our Horticulture team and used in some of our education programs. The Essex Farm provides an opportunity to present New Jersey agriculture and relations of wildlife to domesticated stock by being located adjacent to Wild America. ​

Reptile House

Immerse yourself into the world of reptiles The Reptile House is one the few areas in the zoo that is not geographically themed but focuses on a herpetological collection from around the world. The diversity of reptile, amphibian and invertebrate species is showcased in this area. The building has three large anchor mixed species habitats, including some of the world’s smallest crocodile species. ​ Through large glass panels you can closely view turtles, snakes, and lizards, creating an appreciation for misunderstood reptiles & amphibians.  You will, however, have to search for many of them.  Animals are presented in their natural habitats. You will experience how their camouflage protects them. A Conservation Spotlight tank in the center of this space allows us to highlight Rote’s snake-necked turtles and the in situ work being done to assist with conservation of this species.​

Sea Turtle Recovery

Sea Turtle Recovery

All five species of sea turtles found in the Atlantic Ocean are threatened by pollution, plastic ingestion and boat strikes, and they are losing natural nesting and feeding sites because of coastal development. Sea turtle strandings in the Northeast Region of the United States is on the rise, and Sea Turtle Recovery is the only organization permitted to provide long term care for sick and injured sea turtles in the state. Essex County Turtle Back Zoo partnered with the non-profit Sea Turtle Recovery to help care for sick and injured sea turtles.  This partnership has been an ongoing success and has shown how organizations can work together to save threatened and endangered species. In 2016, a 4,000 square foot care facility was constructed with generous contributions from Prudential, Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of NJ, PSE&B and Matrix Development Group, and helps fulfill the zoo’s mission of conserving and protecting the environment. The recovery hospital provided by & built at Essex County Turtle Back Zoo has five recovery tanks, life support systems, and an intensive care unit for more critically injured turtles. Zoo visitors will be able to see less critical patients while learning about the perils sea turtles face and what the public can do to help. Once the turtles have regained their health, they will be released back into their natural habitat. The recovery hospital provided by & built at Essex County Turtle Back Zoo has five recovery tanks, life support systems, and an intensive care unit for more critically injured turtles. Zoo visitors will be able to see less critical patients while learning about the perils sea turtles face and what the public can do to help. Once the turtles have regained their health, they will be released back into their natural habitat. Sea Turtle Recovery is a nonprofit whose mission includes rehabilitating sick and injured sea turtles for their release back into the wild. Their nonprofit provides medical care, staffing, food cost, public education and other needs of the sea turtles.  Their funding comes from public donations and grants made to them at seaturtlerecovery.org and inside their exhibit space at Turtle Back Zoo. DONATE TO SEA TURTLES Sea Turtle Recovery (STR) is a 501(c)3 organization dedicated to the rehabilitation, preservation and conservation of sea turtles. Its current work extends throughout the state educating the public about the ecological role of sea turtles, threats they face, and ways to protect their future. Now, with the building donation of Essex County Turtle Back Zoo, the Sea Turtle Recovery can begin to fulfill the other portion of its mission to rehabilitate sea turtles for release back into the wild. Our popular Touch Tank features a 1,600- gallon tank with cownose rays and epaulette sharks where visitors have the unique experience of hands-on learning by touching the rays as they swim by. Feeling more adventurous? Add on feeding our Sting Rays! Learn more and check availability under Animal Experiences. As you walk around the indoor space, you will see other tank habitats to explore. An Indo-pacific reef tank highlights the multiple species that make up this ecosystem including corals and various fish and invertebrates​. *This building has multi-stall men's & women's restrooms for visitors.

Wild America

Wild America

The entire North American continent teams with amazing wildlife, whether deep in the forest or right at our communities front door in Essex County. Wild America recaptures the thrill of discovery and explores the complexity of relations between the land and the wildlife that stems from it. ​ Take a hike through a natural area of mature oak, hickory, and maple trees to see native birds of prey such as turkey vulture, bald eagle, owl, raven, and Harris’ hawk. These animals are in secure naturalistic enclosures, but you have the feeling that you are sharing the woodland together. Our newly renovated bald eagle exhibit was opened in February 2021. As wild bald eagles fly overhead, this exhibit highlights the importance of conservation policy and regulations in order to help preserve this species that was once listed on Federal and State Endangered Species Acts. A big cat exhibit which opened in 2011, introduces visitors to the largest felid species in North America. These species strengthen the zoo’s commitment to conservation by providing space for rescue cougars again educating about the challenges of human-animal relationships. At the same time, we promote breeding and reproduction of AZA SAFE Jaguar where we discuss the importance of combining both in and ex situ efforts in a One Plan Approach to species conservation.  Stressing the relation of animals to their (and our) environment, exhibits in this zone present instructive social groupings of animals, maintaining a natural history perspective. The back yard themed black bear exhibit is a compelling visual reminder of local wildlife and surrounding non-animal exhibits highlight themes of human-animal relationships with our bear-proof garbage cans and apiary. Turtle Back Zoo is located at the north end of Essex County’s 2,000 acre South Mountain Reservation.  A network of trails will take you along ridges and through valleys. You will pass by ponds, streams and hemlock falls.  Make time to visit New Jersey’s natural areas and get to know and appreciate the vast variety of animals and plants that can be seen.

World of Water

World of Water

All of the world is connected through water.  The World of Water area is home to endearing water animals such as river otter, flamingos, and our touch tank aquarium species. ​Plantings such as bamboo, reeds and birch trees surround this area to provide the feel of water’s edge.  Our flamingo habitat welcomes our guests with an upbeat Caribbean theme and allows us to manage both Chilean and American species. A recently renovated North American River Otter exhibit, completed in 2021, allows guests to view this playful species both above and below water.​ In 2023, center zoo was renovated creating our Island Giants habitat which provides space for Komodo dragon breeding to support SSP sustainability goals along with Aldabra tortoise. In addition, a Crocodilian building provides indoor, outdoor and under water viewing of our American alligator and tomistoma. Both these habitats highlight species living on islands and wetlands effected by climate change. ​ In 2025, a Madagascar themed habitat featuring several species of lemur as well as radiated tortoise will highlight conservation work being done related to bushmeat in this highly unique island ecosystem.​

TBZ is proud to offer two education programs where guests get a unique look at some of their favorite animals, learn valuable conservation education, and meet the keepers that make it all possible. Animal EncountersBehind the Scenes Tours Animal Encounter Programs are hour-long conservation education programs that feature one of our animals and includes an animal encounter, either in the classroom or out in the zoo.  Your ticket includes admission to the zoo, an education presentation, and bagels and coffee. Program guests do not enter the exhibits or touch the animals.  Programs are held at the Berson Family Center on the east side of the zoo complex (the building next to the TreeTop Adventure Course), outside the zoo proper. Attendees must be at least 6 years old. Children under 18 must be accompanied by a ticketed adult. Tickets are $50/person; discount available for zoo members. Animal Presentations Are you looking for a way to make your animal-loving child's birthday even more special? Animal Presentations get you up close and personal with our education ambassadors. During this program, one of our educators will present 3 animal ambassadors at your rental location. Animals include reptiles, mammals, and invertebrates. You can make requests, but specific animals are never guaranteed. Programs last 45 minutes. For the safety of our animals, the presentation space must be indoors. New Jersey is a “no touch state” which prohibits us from permitting the touching of any non-domesticated species.  Our education staff reserves the right to prohibit touching of even our domesticated species based on the zoo staff’s assessment of a situation and the comfort and safety of the animals, the zoo staff, and/or the program participants.  The educator presenting will inform your guests that, during the presentation, everyone must stay seated, voices must remain low, and food must remain covered or closed. Cost Animal presentations cost $175. This price is for onsite programs only. Zoo admission, room rentals, and other party offerings are not included in this program price. TBZ's Education Department offers a variety of engaging and informative programs that satisfy many science benchmarks. Most programs last 45 minutes and can be adapted to meet different ages and abilities. Please see individual program descriptions for details. Cost Standard classroom programs for 30 individuals is $155. This price is for onsite programs only; adults and children are all included in the 30 person limit. Program Options These programs encourage critical thinking about and meaningful connections to the biology, ecology, and evolution of animals by using guided inquiry, animal ambassadors, and appropriate biofacts to illustrate key scientific concepts and themes. Programs are suggested by age, however please feel free to discuss with us your group’s needs and how our program content may fit into your curriculum. Younger AudiencesOlder AudiencesAdditional Offerings Animal Coverings Description:  Relating to the purpose of our own skins, students investigate the types and functions of animal coverings such as mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates. This is a great class even for pre-K children, and generally includes one touchable animal ambassador. Animal Adaptations Description:  Students discuss adaptations as a concept and explore examples of both physical and behavioral adaptations as demonstrated by a variety of zoo animal ambassadors. Animal Habitats Description:  Every wild habitat supplies its inhabitants with what they need to live, but also presents challenges that must be addressed. Students will explore a few major of habitats, meet some animal ambassadors, discover how habitats provide basic needs and how environmental challenges are managed. Animal Enrichment Description:  Students examine the needs of animals, from feeding and cleaning, to providing the mentally and physically stimulating environments that ensure the health and welfare of mind, body, and soul. Includes meeting a few ambassador animals and an enrichment-creating activity. Animal Myths Description:  This program presents and analyzes some myths and misconceptions about animals. Students will meet live animals and discover that fact, while different from fiction, is just as amazing. Endangered Species and Extinction Description:  What does it mean to be endangered? Students will consider a variety of pathways to extinction and will meet some ambassador animals that illustrate the definitions of endangered or invasive species. Zoo Conservation and Stewardship Description:  Caring for our animal ambassadors goes deeper than just feeding and cleaning!  Participants in this program will engage in a discussion about the history of zoos and TBZ; the evolution of our conservation, education, and research mission; and what we do to protect and serve wildlife locally and globally. Anatomy and Physiology Description:  Using birds as a model organism, students will illustrate and describe the structures, functions, and organization of animals.  Includes an extensive display of related biofacts plus an opportunity to meet ambassador animals and discuss how both their internal and external anatomies have evolved to aid in survival.  Biofacts will be incorporated into the lesson to illustrate the internal design of our animal subjects. Biology, Evolution, and Adaptations Description:  Students will examine the connections between biology, the environment, and adaptive situations that inform the process of evolution in various species. The lesson includes a brief overview of cell division and genetics, followed by a discussion of various genetic expressions. Students will learn about the benefit or detriment certain adaptations pose to individual animals, and the effects on their survival in the wild. This program is about 90 minutes. Enriching Life (Animal Enrichment, Training, and Animal Behavior) Description: Touch, target, and tap! Distance Learning:  TBZ Education Distance Learning is an opportunity to access TBZ programming remotely. Content can be based on current education programs or tailored to the needs/specifications of the group. Distance Learning programs may be a single event, a multiple event arc addressing multiple topics, or as an introduction to/review of a TBZ field trip. Special Needs Groups:  We enjoy providing engaging zoo content-based programs to everyone!  Programming for special needs groups is available upon request; please call or email so we can discuss how we might provide the best possible education experience for your group. Sleepunders at the Zoo:  Enjoy a wild night filled with adventure at the Turtle Back Zoo! Observe our animals in the dark, interact with our Educators and Keepers, and discover how our zoo works behind the scenes. Snacks, age appropriate story time, and animal presentations are included. Then, once the evening of adventure is over, return home to your own bed to sleep the night away. Sleepunders are offered between 6-10pm. Daily On Grounds Public Programs: Live animal presentations are given daily in season (May-October). Keeper talks and animal feedings are often given throughout the day. Early Childhood programs encourage family learning and foster early environmental awareness. We invite young children to discover the natural world through gently structured play, art, stories, animal visits, and more. Early Childhood programming is offered monthly throughout the school year. Where we grow and learn together Family Nature Club (FNC) is all about discovering the world, and playing WITH nature, not just IN nature.  Experience the sounds, smells, and sights of the outdoors with FNC as we explore our natural heritage within Essex County’s parks. Available to individuals 6-106, this family-friendly program include a visit to South Mountain Reservation, Reservoir, Zoo, or local county park as weather permits. Prior to your program, you will receive detailed instructions of where to meet.  Program locations are usually within a 5-10 minute drive of the zoo. We offer two different kinds of FNC Programs to our community: one focused on exploration, the other on service. Nature AdventurerNature Guardian Nature Adventurers is an FNC hiking program where we explore our local ecosystems, from rivers to forests and more.  We strive to foster discovery of NJ’s fascinating and diverse wildlife and the roles that they fill within our local ecosystems, no matter how big or small.  Most programs have a discovery theme, but in the spirit of nature, anything can happen! Turtle Back Zoo is an amazing classroom! Welcome to the wildest classroom in NJ! Our homeschool classes offer students an opportunity to boost scientific literacy and knowledge of the natural world, and learn the importance of life-long environmental stewardship. Available to students ages 6-12, the programs include a visit to South Mountain Reservation, Reservoir, or Zoo as weather permits. These are in-person, drop-off sessions held one Wednesday per month from 11am – 1pm in the Berson Family Center. Fee is $30/student, with a maximum capacity of 20 students. Program fee does not include separate zoo admission. Students are encouraged to bring their own supplies (note books, pens, water bottle). Spring Dates & Themes Wednesday, March 19, 2025 | Animal CommunicationAnimals may not talk like we do, but they have plenty of other ways of expressing themselves. Come discover the variety of communication methods in the animal kingdom. Wednesday, April 23, 2025 | Animal AnatomyWhat is an exoskeleton? How is a bat’s wing like our hand? And do some animals have backwards knees? In this class, we explore the structures of animals’ bodies and highlight the similarities and differences of various families. Wednesday, May 14, 2025 | Creatures Great and SmallThis class looks at the biggest and the tiniest of animals. Find out the advantages and drawbacks of their sizes, as well as the adaptations made around these. REGISTER Drop-off is at the Berson Family Center as early as 10:50am; the program begins promptly at 11am. Outreach: Where the Zoo Comes to You! Your school, youth group, community recreation program, library, senior citizen group, or day care center will connect with our education animals as we explore topics from adaptations to zoology. Educational, entertaining, and engaging, our programs are developed for your audience or you can choose from one of our Classroom Programs. Program Options Outreach programs are suggested for groups of all kinds including schools, senior citizen and assisted living centers, libraries, and community recreation programs who want us to bring the conversation of wildlife, nature, and conservation to them! We offer a variety of program topics; a comprehensive list of options can be found under the Classroom tab. Programs are suggested by age; however, please feel free to discuss with us your group’s needs and where we may fit into your curriculum or goals. Cost 0 to 15 Miles of Zoo, up to 30 minutes maximum travel time (regardless of mileage).$205.00 for the first program; capacity up to 30 people (children and adults total); duration is 30-45 minutes.More than 15 miles from the Zoo, up to 45 minutes maximum travel time (regardless of mileage).$280.00 for the first program; capacity up to 30 people (children and adults total); duration is 30-45 minutes.$130.00 for an additional program; capacity up to 30 people (children and adults total); duration is 30-45 minutes.  The second program must be concurrent with the first program. We cannot be stationed in rooms or venues with other animals present. Outdoor venues are not approved for outreach locations.  Amplified music, bands, construction noise, and loud voices or many voices at once can be problematic for the animals, and such activities should not take place in the same room or nearby. New Jersey is a “no touch state” which prohibits us from permitting the touching of any non-domesticated species.  Our education staff reserves the right to prohibit touching of even our domesticated species based on the zoo staff’s assessment of a situation and the comfort and safety of the animals, the zoo staff, and/or the program participants. Calling all Teachers! Earn Professional Development Hours at the Zoo. Whether you teach upper level science or cross-curricular elementary, TBZ has some exciting PD opportunities for you! Join experienced Educators for NGSS aligned professional development programs leveraging the resources of Turtle Back Zoo. Each session will cover relevant scientific background as well as provide advice and materials for classroom implementation. Additionally, participate in a special animal encounter and enjoy time exploring the zoo. The cost is $100/person; attendees will earn 5 Professional Development Hours. As defenders of wildlife and members of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), we support AZA conservation initiatives like SAFE: Saving Animals From Extinction. SAFE programs develop and implement conservation projects that protect threatened animals, including several that you can find here at TBZ. But, exotic species from around the globe are not the only animals in danger. Unfortunately, all of the North American Songbirds (NAS) are being threatened by global development causing deforestation and climate change, and these are only a few of the dangers they face. The SAFE NAS plan was developed to help preserve these birds` natural habitats and reduce other risks to their survival, such as building collisions, pesticide use, and keeping predators like house cats indoors. But, for the everyday person, we can`t always make these changes ourselves. Here at TBZ, and in collaboration with the New Jersey Audubon Society, we have many different ways for you to learn more about North American songbirds and how to keep them safe:

• Bird Friendly Coffee: Coffee is often grown in big empty fields that were once home to forests that thousands of birds lived in. Bird Friendly Coffee ensures that the coffee is grown in a forest, preserving the habitats of the songbirds. This coffee is sold in the TBZ gift shop in partnership with the AZA and SAFE NAS.

• Christmas Bird Count + Great Backyard Bird Count: Spend the day hiking around the reservoir and counting birds of different species! How many can you find?

• World Migratory Bird Day: Celebrate migratory birds in the zoo with us by learning about them at a special table in the zoo and taking a birding hike around the reservoir to help us monitor bird populations.

• World Series of Birding: Get a team of birders together and compete to see who can identify the most birds in 24 hours! This is a nationwide competition that occurs yearly, and TBZ is part of the reigning champion team!

This is the 42nd year of this competition and the 4th year that Essex County Turtle Back Zoo is teaming up with our conservation partners at Cora Hartshorn Arboretum and Bird Sanctuary.
